The Power is Back and I Look Different
As the East Coast of the United State recovers from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy I am happy that some of the people who need power and have suffered from this storm are getting their power and normalcy back. My power came back in my neighborhood after 6 full days of dark and cold.
There was something nice that happened when the streets were black. People were being nice to each other. People who never met before were sharing. Drivers were being extra courteous. It seemed people were thinking about each other and the well functioning of society instead of me, me, me. Sure there were those didn’t surrender to the gift of common experience and couldn’t let go of their agenda to look around and see if anyone among us needed help. I even heard Rush Limbaugh explaining why Obama’s being black was the reason this storm was so devastating.
This experience has nudged me a bit more awake – at least temporarily – to the artificiality we have created around ourselves – that I have created around myself – both in creature comforts and in the goals and purposes we assume. Because I am well abled, generally healthy and a law unto myself, I was able to enjoy the simplicity of candle light, layered clothing and eating raw foods. And I received a wonderful gift from the experience. When the power was out, I saw myself in a different light. As the encrustments of our artificial world regain their presence, I extend to everyone the wish that we can hang on to some of the simplicity we were able to experience over the past several days.
I wish all Peace and Pastures of Plenty
